Natural Lawn Mandurah — roll-on turf that actually takes on sand

Real grass can thrive on the Peel coast if the ground underneath it is prepared properly. We amend the sand, lay the right variety for your sun and traffic, and set the retic so it establishes before the heat hits.

New lawn on raw Mandurah sand fails for predictable reasons: the sand is water-repellent, it holds no nutrients, and the lawn is laid in December when it needs 10 mm of water every day to take. We fix all three. Soil improved with clay, compost and wetting agent. The right variety for the spot. And timing or an exemption so the first few weeks of watering are covered.

Sir Walter DNA-certified Buffalo for shade tolerance and soft leaf. Kikuyu for cheap, tough, full-sun family lawns. Couch (Wintergreen or Santa Ana) for a fine, hard-wearing finish. Empire or Sir Grange Zoysia for slow-growing, low-mow luxury. We'll tell you straight which one will work in your yard — and which won't.

FAQ

Natural Lawn questions, answered

How much is roll-on lawn in Mandurah?
Supplied and laid on prepared soil, kikuyu typically costs $16–$28/m² and Sir Walter Buffalo $26–$42/m² in the Perth–Mandurah market. Zoysia sits at the premium end. Soil preparation is the variable — a block with existing good soil costs less than raw builder's sand.
What's the best lawn for Mandurah?
For most family yards: Sir Walter Buffalo if you have shade or want a soft leaf; Kikuyu if it's full sun, big and gets hammered by kids and dogs; Zoysia if you hate mowing. Couch for a fine finish in full sun. All four handle our heat with two waterings a week once established.
When is the best time to lay lawn?
Autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November) — warm soil, mild air, and you're outside the winter sprinkler ban. Summer lays work but need daily water for two weeks; we help with a Water Corp exemption.
Why does my lawn die in patches every summer?
Water-repellent sand. Water beads and runs off the dry patches no matter how long the sprinklers run. Fix it with a soil wetter, a top-dress of clay-based amendment and aerating. We can do it as a one-off lawn renovation.
Can I fertilise my lawn?
Yes, but carefully. The Peel-Harvey estuary is under a phosphorus reduction plan, and lawn fertiliser leaching through sand is a big part of the problem. Use a low-P lawn fertiliser (about N:P:K 10:1:6) at 12 g/m² or less for buffalo or kikuyu, only in spring and autumn.
