Most of Mandurah's new estates — Lakelands, Meadow Springs, Madora Bay, Baldivis, Golden Bay, Secret Harbour — are built on cut-and-fill lots. That means retaining walls between neighbours, along driveways and around alfresco areas, and it means getting them right matters because they're holding up someone's yard.

We build three main systems. Limestone block for the classic WA look and long life. Concrete sleepers with galvanised steel posts for the best value on straight runs and higher walls. Rendered or face block walls for a modern finish. Every wall gets a proper footing, drainage aggregate and ag-pipe behind it, and engineered design plus a council building permit when it retains more than 500 mm.

Retaining Walls questions, answered

Which retaining wall is cheapest?

Concrete sleeper walls are usually the most cost-effective in the Perth–Mandurah market at around $260–$525 per square metre of wall face. Limestone block walls run $475–$830/m² but suit the coastal look and last longer in salt air. We'll price both if you're unsure.

Do retaining walls need council approval in WA?

Yes if the wall retains more than 500 mm of soil, or is associated with other building work. You need a building permit and a certified engineer's design. The City of Mandurah also requires planning approval for fill over 500 mm in some cases, and walls near boundaries may need neighbour consent. We organise all of it.

Who pays for a retaining wall on the boundary?

Unlike dividing fences, there's no automatic cost-sharing rule for retaining walls. Generally the owner who changed the natural ground level (cut or filled) is responsible. Most estate developers build the shared walls at subdivision; later changes are the owner's.

How high can a sleeper wall go?

Standard concrete sleeper systems go to around 1.8–2.4 m with engineered posts and footings. Above about 1 m most councils want a fence or barrier on top, and surcharge from driveways or pools changes the design.

Can you put a fence on top of the wall?

Yes. Fence posts can be set into the wall's footing or bolted to the top of the sleeper posts, depending on the system. Tell us at quote stage so the footings are sized for it.
