Limestone blocks are the backbone of Mandurah landscaping. They're made from the same Spearwood dune limestone the Peel coast sits on, they shrug off salt air, they don't rot like timber sleepers and they look right against our light sand and native planting. Done properly, a limestone wall will outlast the house.

Done badly, it leans. We dig a proper trench footing, compact and set the first course on a concrete or compacted road-base bed, bond every course, backfill with drainage aggregate and ag-pipe, and cap or joint-finish to suit. For walls holding more than 500 mm we organise the engineer's design and the council building permit so the job is legal and insurable.

How much do limestone block walls cost in Mandurah?

In the Perth–Mandurah market a limestone block retaining wall typically costs $475–$830 per square metre of wall face, or roughly $295–$630 per lineal metre for a one-metre-high wall. Higher walls, engineering, difficult access and extra drainage add to this. We give a fixed price after a site measure.

Do I need a permit for a limestone retaining wall?

In WA any wall retaining more than 500 mm of soil needs a building permit from your council (City of Mandurah, City of Rockingham or Shire of Murray) and an engineer's certified design. Walls under 500 mm generally don't, unless they're part of other building work or close to a boundary. We handle the paperwork.

Reconstituted or natural limestone?

Reconstituted limestone blocks (crushed limestone and cement, pressed into blocks) are what you see across Mandurah — consistent, strong and cost-effective. Natural quarried limestone is beautiful but heavier, pricier and more variable. We build with both.

Will the wall go white or green?

Some efflorescence (white salts) is normal in the first year and washes off. Green algae can appear on shaded, damp faces; good drainage behind the wall and the occasional pressure wash keep it clean. Sealing is optional.

Can you build a wall on the boundary?

Often, but it depends on height, whether you're cutting or filling, and your neighbour. Excavation closer to the boundary than its depth can need neighbour consent (BA20) or engineer certification. We'll tell you exactly what applies to your block.
