Landscaping Halls Head

Halls Head is Mandurah's biggest suburb and probably its most varied — 1960s and 70s brick-and-tile homes around the Mandurah Country Club, 1980s and 90s canal estates at Port Mandurah, and newer coastal lots at Seascapes along the ocean.

Landscaping in Halls Head: what we see

Halls Head is Mandurah's biggest suburb and probably its most varied — 1960s and 70s brick-and-tile homes around the Mandurah Country Club, 1980s and 90s canal estates at Port Mandurah, and newer coastal lots at Seascapes along the ocean. We've worked on all three, and each has its own landscaping problems.

Canal-side blocks need salt-tolerant planting, careful levels down to the canal wall (walls within 6 m of the canal wall have their own rules) and retic that doesn't blast the water. Older homes usually need failing timber retaining swapped for limestone, lawns renovated or replaced, and thirsty 1980s plantings converted to waterwise gardens. Seascapes lots are raw sand and wind — screening and soil improvement first.

Three things to know about Halls Head yards

  • Salt spray on the ocean side burns soft-leaf plants — we use coastal natives, Westringia, cushion bush and dwarf olives.
  • Canal lots: planning rules differ near the canal wall; we check before quoting any retaining.
  • Lots of shade from established trees around the Country Club — Sir Walter Buffalo rather than kikuyu.

FAQ

Halls Head landscaping questions

Can you landscape a canal-side block in Halls Head?
Yes — we've done plenty around Port Mandurah and the Halls Head canals. The main differences are salt-tolerant plant selection, retaining and paving levels running down to the canal wall, and avoiding retic overspray into the canal. Retaining within 6 m of a canal wall is often exempt from planning in the City of Mandurah but still needs a building permit over 500 mm.
What are the watering days in Halls Head?
Two days a week set by the last digit of your street number — 1 or 8: Wed & Sat; 2 or 9: Sun & Thu; 3 or 0: Mon & Fri; 4: Tue & Sat; 5: Sun & Wed; 6: Mon & Thu; 7: Tue & Fri — before 9am or after 6pm, with sprinklers off 1 June to 31 August. Bores included. Use our watering-day finder to check.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Halls Head?
Under the WA Building Regulations any wall retaining more than 500 mm needs a building permit from the City of Mandurah and an engineer's design. Walls under 500 mm are generally exempt. We handle the paperwork.
