Landscaping in Greenfields: what we see

Greenfields was laid out from 1980 and is one of Mandurah's most populous suburbs — a big mix of family homes, retirement communities, schools and the Mandurah Forum end of town. Blocks are moderate, mostly flat, mostly sand.

It's the classic Mandurah renovation suburb: original lawns that have thinned to sand and weeds, retic that half works, timber or brick retaining past its best. We renovate or replace lawns, rebuild retic properly hydrozoned, swap retaining for limestone and add paving and planting that handle two waterings a week.

Three things to know about Greenfields yards

  • Grey sand here is extremely water repellent — soil wetter plus clay amendment is standard.
  • Lots of rentals and retirement units: fast, tidy, low-maintenance packages.
  • Flat blocks make exposed aggregate driveways and paths straightforward.

FAQ

Greenfields landscaping questions

My Greenfields lawn is more sand than grass — replace or renovate?
If more than about 40% is bare, replacement on properly amended soil is cheaper long term. Under that, a renovation — scarify, aerate, wetting agent, clay top-dress, low-P fertiliser and retic fix — in autumn or spring will usually bring it back.
What are the watering days in Greenfields?
Two days a week set by the last digit of your street number — 1 or 8: Wed & Sat; 2 or 9: Sun & Thu; 3 or 0: Mon & Fri; 4: Tue & Sat; 5: Sun & Wed; 6: Mon & Thu; 7: Tue & Fri — before 9am or after 6pm, with sprinklers off 1 June to 31 August. Bores included. Use our watering-day finder to check.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Greenfields?
Under the WA Building Regulations any wall retaining more than 500 mm needs a building permit from the City of Mandurah and an engineer's design. Walls under 500 mm are generally exempt. We handle the paperwork.
