Landscaping Falcon

Falcon sits on the narrow neck of land between the ocean at Avalon Beach and the Peel Inlet at Cox Bay. Blocks are mostly 1970s–90s holiday-home style on big sandy lots, with a newer wave of knock-down rebuilds along Old Coast Road and the beach streets.

Landscaping in Falcon: what we see

Falcon sits on the narrow neck of land between the ocean at Avalon Beach and the Peel Inlet at Cox Bay. Blocks are mostly 1970s–90s holiday-home style on big sandy lots, with a newer wave of knock-down rebuilds along Old Coast Road and the beach streets.

Landscaping here is about wind, salt and sand. We build limestone walls and planters as windbreaks, amend the sand heavily before any lawn goes down, and lean on artificial turf for the ocean-facing side where natural grass gets shredded. Estuary-side blocks are calmer and suit bigger lawns and shade trees.

Three things to know about Falcon yards

  • Westerlies off Avalon Beach — plan screening and seating walls on the leeward side.
  • Big old blocks often have an original bore: we'll test it before deciding between bore and scheme retic.
  • Falcon's sand is as water-repellent as it gets; wetting agent and clay amendment are non-negotiable under lawn.

FAQ

Falcon landscaping questions

Will natural lawn survive near the beach in Falcon?
On the estuary side and in sheltered back yards, yes — kikuyu or couch on amended soil with proper retic does well. On ocean-facing front yards that cop salt and wind, we usually recommend artificial turf or a waterwise gravel-and-native garden instead.
What are the watering days in Falcon?
Two days a week set by the last digit of your street number — 1 or 8: Wed & Sat; 2 or 9: Sun & Thu; 3 or 0: Mon & Fri; 4: Tue & Sat; 5: Sun & Wed; 6: Mon & Thu; 7: Tue & Fri — before 9am or after 6pm, with sprinklers off 1 June to 31 August. Bores included. Use our watering-day finder to check.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Falcon?
Under the WA Building Regulations any wall retaining more than 500 mm needs a building permit from the City of Mandurah and an engineer's design. Walls under 500 mm are generally exempt. We handle the paperwork.
